SLU Professor becomes Young Academy member
The Young Academy of Sweden has been founded. The initiative comes from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (KVA) which has gathered a number of young excellent researchers, in order to create more dynamics in Swedish research. One of the chosen is Professor Örjan Carlborg, Department of Animal Breeding and Genetics, SLU.
One of many international role models for the academy can be found in Germany, where ”Die Junge Akademie” plays an active part in research politics, and has successfully had an effect on terms of employment for young professors.
Sweden´s Young Academy has already begun working. It has, for example, given its views on the forthcoming EU Research Programme.
The academy will initially have 22 members, ultimately expanding to a maximum of 40 members in the future. 1981 medicine Nobel Prize winner Torsten Wiesel is the patron of the academy.
The academy was founded on May 27 at a ceremony where the KVA management planted Swedish field flowers in the KVA garden, as a symbol of the power of growth inherent in Swedish research. The academy is financed by the Ragnar Söderberg Foundation.
