As of July 1, the former Swedish Board of Fisheries laboratories will be part of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), following a government decision of February 17 this year. To SLU this means a substantial addition in knowledge about aquatic ecosystems.
”Now we expand the work on fish and water at SLU. We increase our competence and get a better perspective as a whole which will benefit our environmental assessment and research activities”, says Vice-Chancellor Lisa Sennerby Forsse.
SLU will add some 150 new employees to the staff, and eight new locations. Today the research laboratories are located in Lysekil, Drottningholm and Öregrund and the Älvkarleby fishery station. In addition there are a handful of local subsidiary offices.

“SLU is the university best suited for us to continue run and develop our core activities, i.e. monitoring the aquatic ecosystems. The adjustment may take some time, but we hope to have increased opportunities to develop research as a support for the monitoring and also to find new partners both within and outside SLU, says Magnus Appelberg, Deputy Head of the new Department of Aquatic Resources.
The overall goal for the new Department is to follow and evaluate the state and development of the aquatic ecosystems, with a main focus on fish and shellfish. The mission includes studying man´s effects on fish populations and the aquatic ecosystems, an important part of the Department´s work is about collaboration and advising authorities and the surrounding society.
