SLU gets one million SEK for global project
STINT, a foundation for the internationalisation of research and education, has granted SLU one million Swedish kronor for the project The Global Challenges University Alliance. The project, initiated and lead by SLU´s Assistant Vice-Chancellor Johan Schnürer, aims at building a research and education alliance of the best universities from each continent active with the global challenges in food supply, bioenergy, sustainable urban development and climate issues.
The building of this alliance is done through thematic workshops on research and the planning of common courses in researcher training and advanced basic education. An overall aim is to educate young leaders of the future in global bioeconomy. A first workshop, Biofuels and Biorefineries, will be held September 26—28 with participants from the Cornell University, the University of Tokyo, the National University of Singapore, China Agricultural University, the University of Makerere, the University of Pretoria and SLU. A second workshop, The Future of Food – Security, Safety and Quality, is planned for May, 2013.
Fully built, the alliance is expected to include circa 25 universities from various climate and cultural zones, with an interest in global cooperation on developing the understanding and sustainable use and management of biological natural resources.
