A bio-based economy

A bio-based economy is an umbrella term, addressing several of the global challenges, e.g. food security for a growing population along with sustainable development in agricultural and silvicultural production, and emissions of greehouse gases.

A bio-based economy - one priority area

SLU is concentrating on seven sub-areas within A bio-based economy in itsStrategy 2013-2016.

  1. Innovative use of biological raw materials to replace fossil raw materials
  2. Efficient and sustainable production systems in agriculture, forestry
    and fisheries
  3. The food chain
  4. Aquatic resources
  5. Goal conflicts concerning natural resources
  6. Social and economic development in rural areas
  7. Cycles between urban and rural areas
