Animal and human health
One of SLU's strengths
"Within veterinary medicine, SLU is top-ranked in a number of areas, including infection biology, an area of great importance for both animal production and human health – not least from a global perspective, where zoonoses are a growing problem.
Reproductive biology is another key area, with particular importance placed on environment-related reproductive toxicology and basic research in comparative reproduction biology, which are both judged to have particularly good potential for development.
SLU has a strong international profile in animal welfare research. Within food and health research, SLU’s profile is particularly strong in the development of markers for the intake of specific foodstuffs and the effect of nutrition on health.
Probiotics research at SLU has involved gene mapping of micro-organisms as well as the role of cell wall proteins and cell protein function in the colonization intestines of humans and animals, with the goal of genetically tailor-making probiotics for different diseases."
