Agroforestry and Soil Management

Priority Programs: PhD in Agroforestry and agrostology, and Soil Management, watershed management.

Stakeholders: NUR, High Learning Institutions, Central Government institutions (MINAGRI, RAB, MINIRENA).

Entry requirements: MSc in Agroforestry or soil sciences or related disciplines (to consider the background of the candidate).

Potential students: Currently, the department is running an MSc programme in agroforestry and its laureates will feed in the PhD program.

Collaborators: Rwandan government, Sida, ICRAF, RUFORUM, TSBF, ANAFE, etc.

Needs for curriculum development: Whereas the MSc programme in Agroforestry already exists, the curriculum for MSc in soil sciences will be developed prior to developing the PhD curriculum for both Agroforestry and Soil Sciences. The department will set-up an ad hoc team for curriculum development and will request from its partners external specialized consultants to develop the curriculum.

Available capacity: 1 full professor in soil sciences, 2 associate professors in soil sciences, 1 full professor in forestry ecology, 1 associate professor in agroforestry, 1 Ph.D. holder in soil sciences, 1PhD holder in natural resources management, 2 PhD in pipeline in soil sciences, 1 PhD in pipeline in agroforestry, 1 referential soil sciences laboratory, 2 training soil sciences laboratories, 1 greenhouse, 2 experimental research stations in forestry, and 3 multidisciplinary experimental research stations.

Infrastructure & facilities required: Classrooms, office space, library (virtual & physical), logistic and teaching material.
