Bioenergy:
Renewable energy from forests and fields
An ecologically sustainable development depends on a reduction in the use of fossil fuels. The use of bioenergy is steadily increasing in Sweden.
Thus forests and fields can become even more important suppliers of renewable energy, mitigating the increase of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
At SLU, researchers work to adapt the production of bioenergy sources to a changing climate. Energy crops, e.g. Salix and Reed canary grass, and biomass harvested in forestry and agriculture are some subjects that are investigated.
Parallel to this, the aim is to minimize the environmental effects of this production. SLU continously monitors changes in land use and forest management as well as the environmental status of water and soil.
