Environment and natural resources:

Man affects nature

The use of the natural resources soil and forest brings both advantages and disadvantages for the environment. But often it is the same fundamental knowledge that needs to be applied, whether you are growing potatoes, improving the fertility of forestland, or reducing the impact on the environment.

The research at SLU in the areas of environment and conservation include nutrient cycles, and the loss of nutrients into water, as well as the effects of cultivation and forestry on soil micro-organisms and biodiversity. Grazing animals helping to keep the landscape open is another example.

Eutrophication of the Baltic Sea is a growing problem. The emission of nutrients to the sea has to be reduced, but better management of fisheries is also required. To implement ecosystem-based management...
2012-01-13 -  A warmer climate gives more carbon in forest soils
Temperature, precipitation and growing season length have a large impact on how quickly organic materials decompose.
2011-12-29 -  How does climate change affect Sweden’s mountain vegetation?
Mountain forest biomass in Sweden has increased by as much as 19 per cent over the past 13 years, researchers show in a recently published study. The next step is to review data from Sweden’s national...
