Horticulture:

Healthy food and pleasant surroundings

Fruit, berries and vegetables have great nutritional importance with their high fibre and vitamin content. Nursery plants, pot plants and cut flowers make our surroundings more pleasant, both outdoors and indoors.

An entire professional group cultivates market garden produce, both in greenhouses and in open fields. These horticultural products are sold to consumers and private garden owners, who benefit from growing fruit and vegetables. In addition to producing their own food, they also get the bonus of fresh air and exercise.

Research in the area of horticulture is primarily aimed at commercial production. Examples of subjects are techniques of cultivation, plant protection, harvesting, storage, nutritional content, distribution and marketing.
