The definition of nature interpretation upon which SCNI’s activities are based was formulated in the beginning of the 20-th century by the Nordic Council of Ministers:
"Nature interpretation can be understood as communication, information and other activities that make it easier for people to experience nature and to develop their knowledge about and feelings for nature. The aim of nature interpretation is to improve the understanding of ecological and cultural relations and for the role of humanity in the nature. That improves the possibilities of positive experiences of nature and also increased environmental awareness both on a personal level and in society as a whole."
In the agreement on establishing SCNI, a clarification was made:
"Nature" in this context means both the naturally and the culturally shaped landscapes.
SCNI has a broad task including everything from initiating research to developing a quality assurance system for nature interpreters. We also develop methods for evaluation of nature interpretation and take part in a project aimed at helping children and young people find their way to nature. Our network consists of more than 1300 members, and they receive our newsletter and newmail seven times a year. They are also invited to courses and seminars that we organise. SCNI cooperates with the Unit of Environmental Communication, offering an academic distance course (3 credits) for active nature interpreters.
SCNI was established in 2008 and is situated at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Uppsala.
