Eu Sheng Wang (Wes)

Eu Sheng Wang
A passionately curious research scientist who graduated with a bachelor’s in Plant Biotechnology (2010) and a PhD in Biotechnology (2016) from the University of Nottingham. I joined the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU- Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet) in 2017 for postdoctoral training with the Department of Plant Protection Biology in the area of sustainable agriculture of potato. In 2019, I joined the Department of Plant Breeding where I am currently facilitating research on the development of more sustainable oil crop and sugar beet varieties to reduce the carbon footprint of agriculture. My current work involves the improvement of oil and plant product quality in several different oil crops species, and the improvement of disease resistance in sugar beet. I am also actively involved in student teaching and supervision where I hope to nurture the next generation of scientists!

Presentation

Being an advocate for the movement towards sustainability, I have a strong interest in utilizing modern techniques in Biotechnology to develop more sustainable crops and processing methods in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture. Over the last decade, I have developed extensive regional and international networks with researchers and research laboratories dedicated to the sustainable development of:

- More efficient oil and energy crops
- Sustainable food production strategies
- Disease-resistant crop varieties
- Biofuel production from agricultural waste
- Biopharmaceuticals in plants

Teaching

I have lectured and supervised students at the undergraduate, masters and PhD levels in areas relating to biotechnology with particular emphasis on genetic engineering and gene editing for improved plant product quality. I am currently teaching in the courses of Advanced Plant Breeding and Genetic Resources, Applied Plant Biotechnology, and Plant Breeding and Plant Physiology here at SLU Alnarp.
