In our laboratory we perform analyses of feed and other products mainly from research in the agricultural area. Due to the diversity of the research projects there is a big demand for flexibility in our laboratory work. Our commissioners are primarily our own department and other departments of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. We also collaborate with other laboratories and with the industry.
The laboratory staff take part at all levels in the education at our department. This includes undergraduate, postgraduate and post doc projects, in Sweden and internationally.
Our laboratory is located in well adapted premises including a special area for sample preparation fully equipped for crushing, drying and milling the samples. All analyses are performed with modern equipment by qualified technicians and with certified methods.
In addition to standard feed evaluation methods we can also study degradation kinetics of different fractions of feed with in vitro methods, eg. carbohydrates and protein fractions. VOS, a method for digestibility and energy evaluation of forage was developed in our laboratory.
Carbohydrates are analysed with enzymes or with HPLC and the more fibrous parts can be analysed for NDF, ADF and lignin content. Total nitrogen, ammonia nitrogen and different types of nitrogen availability as buffer soluble nitrogen and pepsine soluble nitrogen can be performed with the Kjeldahl method. Fat analyses are made with solvent extractions. GC and HPLC methods are used to determine fermentation products in silage and rumen content and for determination of fatty acids in feed and milk products.
