Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment

Our research, education and environmental monitoring and assessment is focused on bettering our understanding of environmental changes of inland surface waters, as well as analyses of the underlying causes of any changes. Our research includes environmental pollutants, biodiversity, and ecosystem services such as drinking water. Our accredited laboratories analyse water chemistry, pesticides, and biota in lakes and streams. We are also national datahosts for waterchemistry and biological data from lakes and watercourses.

Education

We impart knowledge on the practical tools available for analysis of environmental trends and hazards, and assessments of environmental quality. We also wish to convey a knowledge-based and critical approach to environmental data and environmental reports.

Research

Our research aims to improve the understanding of aquatic ecosystems and to improve methods for environmental assessment. It contributes to the sustainable use of water and other natural resources. The research is based on assessment data, field studies, and experiments. Photo by: Fernando Chaguaceda, SLU.

Environmental assessment

We have a central role in the monitoring of rivers and lakes in Sweden through our work within environmental assessment. We do sampling, analyses of samples and evaluation of results. Our strength is the combination of research and environmental assessment.

Data host

We have a mission from the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management to be data host for data collected from inland waters.

Laboratories

Our laboratories have long experiences of accredited and quality assured analyses of water chemistry, aquatic biology and organic risk pollutants.
