New faces

Ximou Song

Ximou Song is a student from Carleton College in Minnesota, USA and works with Anna Berlin and collaborates with Yue Jin at the Cereal Disease laboratory, St. Paul, MN, for two months this summer (June 15 to August 15). His project is about rust on barberry.

Rasa Buozyte, a post-doctoral researcher from Lithuania, will be visiting our department during June. Rasa is studying the effects of drought and high N deposition on ectomycorrhizal fungi together with Audrius Menkis. Her visit is funded by the Research Council of Lithuania.
Florence Uwamahoro is a PhD student at SLU but is part of a Sida program to upgrade the the University of Rwanda.  She will be doing parts of her research here and parts in Rwanda.  Her research involves a comparison of two bacterial plant pathogens, Ralstonia solanacearum (on potato and possibly banana) and Xanthomonas campestris pv. musacearum (an 'emerging' pathogen of banana in East Africa).
Ntizo Senkesha is also from Rwanda, but only visiting as part of a Sida-financed program 'Bioinnovate'.  He is looking at variation in Phytophthora infestans from Rwanda.

Silvia Pioli is from Italy and arrived on the 17th of March. She will stay for six months and work on wood-inhabiting fungal communities with Ariana and Anders.

Maria Elene Johansson is a biologist working with us since the 10th of March. She is finishing a GIS-education by doing her course-practice at our Department. Her task is to help Anders and Kerstin to plan and pre-analyze forest sites for a field study this summer. If anybody needs gis-help later during the spring, Maria may be able to help you. She will stay with us until her tasks are completed, at least a month and possibly until early summer.
Nathalie Kamou is from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. She will be with us for three months on a Greek state's scholarship. She is working with Dan and Mukesh on the gene expression and interaction of Clonostachys rosea with a phenazine producing Rhizobacterium.

Erica Dello Jacovo is from Universita di Pavia, Italy.  She joins us the 10th of March and will be here for the next three months on a DIAROD STSM. She is working on the detection and identification of Dothistroma spp. in needle samples from different pine species collected in Spain and in Italy.
Kristin Krause has started doing the Master thesis at our department. She will be working on maternal effects, and trans-generational increased resistance to pathogens. For now, she spends most of the time at the computer room. Malin Elfstrand and Jonàs Oliva will be supervisors.

Hnin Ei Phyu is a new graduate student from Uppsala University. She will do her project work (15 credits) under the supervision of Sadhna and Björn on exploring possibilities of using root micro-organisms for the control of seed-borne diseases in faba bean.

Hnin comes from Myanmar and has an education in microbiology.

Sofia Alvarez Nordström is a new master-student that will work together with Magnus, Dan and Mukesh. The title of her project is “Endophytic growth of Clonostachys rosea in tomato and Arabidopsis thaliana”.

Maruf Hassan will do a master thesis with Kerstin, Malin and Miguel studying candidate genes for resistance to Heterobasidion parviporum in Norway spruce. He will select candidate resistance genes from a recent unpublished QTL study and study the expression of these genes in the bark after infection (QPCR and RNAseq) and functional analysis by molecular cloning and transformation.
