This course is specifically aimed at students starting the Ecology Masters Degree. The aim of the course is to provide students with a sound foundation in the key skills which they will require to study at this level. This includes an introduction to scientific theory and ethics and to project planning in relationship to ecological studies. There is a short excursion to various field research stations as an introduction to advanced field ecology. The major components include training in information competence and information literacy, which are placed in the context of the ecological sciences. Students are also given guidance in the assessment and understanding of ecological studies and in the fundamental techniques of presenting data orally and scientific writing techniques. The course includes both group work and individual guidance and training in the skills essential to the successful completion of the Ecology Masters Degree.
