The overall objective of the course is to provide students with deeper knowledge of the most important processes controlling water, energy and element flows in the soil-plant-atmosphere system. Special emphasis is placed on understanding dynamic processes and interchanges between different parts of the system, and on the ability to carry out simulations through numerical modelling of the system and the component processes. The models are used to quantify water and solute flows and to analyse interactions between the processes and factors that control flows and stores in the system, and to understand and analyse the temporal dynamics of different flows. The computer exercises include examples from various ecosystems/cropping systems, urban soils and various climates. In a mini-project, students get "hands-on" experience in solving a practical soil and water related problem.
