Sweden-Brazil Agroecology (course package), 60.0 credits

The course package is part of Agroecology - Master´s Programme and is open for independent participants.

Farming and food production are ecologically, economically and socially important in all societies. Worldwide there is a need for academic experts that can deal with land use systems that are complex, multifunctional and rapidly changing. Agroecology - course package contains theoretical bases and methodologies for agroecological and interdisciplinary analyses needed to contribute to sustainable development of livelihoods based on local renewable resources. The course package consists of four courses, each of 15 credits.

The first course Agroecology Basics focuses on agroecosystems as integrated social and natural systems in constant change. Description of environmental factors, farming practices and socio-economic conditions that influence the sustainability of agricultural and horticultural production and livelihoods of farmers will be presented.

The aim of the second course Ecology of Production Systems is to understand the interdependency as well as specific aspects of productivity and sustainability, crops and livestock, social, economic and institutional dimensions of small scale farming systems in a local and global perspective. By working with small holder cases from different countries and different ecological settings, the student will be exposed to different kinds of agricultural systems.

The third course Environmental Economics and Management provides fundamental knowledge in economic models and tools as a basis for discussing and dealing with environmental issues relevant to agriculture and horticulture. The objective is to provide tools for systems analysis based on economic sustainability criteria.

The last course Project Management and Process Facilitation gives a broad competence in supporting, planning and managing collaborative development and research work in complex contexts such as agriculture. The students will train on collaboration, project management and process facilitation between stakeholders from related areas.

Prerequisites

120 credits, of which 90 credits in social- or natural science. English B from upper secondary school.
