The course package is part of Management of Fish and Wildlife Populations - Master´s Programme and Forest Science - Master´s Programme and is open for independent participants.
From Europe to the tropics and in all other areas of the globe, the scientific basis and the skills needed for the successful management of fish and wildlife resources are remarkably similar. This course block will give you a solid foundation in these skills and prepare you for a career in both governmental and non-governmental organizations working in many areas of natural resource management! Examples include government agencies responsible for natural resource management, non-governmental organizations dealing with conservation issues, hunters or fisheries organizations, landowner associations, private companies active in natural resources (e.g. forestry and hydroelectric power companies), and nature tourism enterprises. This course block will also be a sound basis towards a doctorate and a research career. The course block is made up of four courses. 1) Fish and Wildlife Census Techniques includes methods to assess the size and structure of populations. Students will perform all steps from formulating plans to the analysis, compilation and presentation of results, 2) Applied Population Ecology includes many aspects of sustainable harvest & conservation models of minimum viable population sizes, and how fragmentation influences populations, 3) Human Dimensions of Fish and Wildlife Management shows how a consideration of human aspects can improve the success and acceptance of management and conservation programs; many of the topics like how to assess attitudes and opinions are also extremely valuable to future employment with any large company that needs to deal with public opinion, 4) the course Fish and Wildlife Management synthesizes knowledge gained in previous courses and by using many real-world examples, focusses on improving the scientific and practical skills needed to be a successful manager of fish or wildlife populations.
