 Welcome

as an exchange student at SLU

The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences is happy to welcome all exchange students. We hope being on exchange will be an eye-opening and worthwhile experience, and that you greatly enjoy your time at SLU.

Before your arrival you should have received a Letter of Acceptance, Learning Agreement and information regarding accommodation.  The learning agreement states what courses you are enrolled in.  If you have not already done so, please sign it, along with your international coordinator, and send it back to SLU.

Start of the semester

The academic year will begin on 3rd September 2012, and end on 9th June 2013.  First semester is from the 3rd September 2012 - 20th January 2013, and second semester is from the 21st January 2013 - 9th June 2013.  An orientation programme for new students will be held on each SLU campus on the 30th and 31st August 2012.  Though orientation is not compulsory, it is extremely important that you attend.  To read more about the orientation programme, visit Orientation.

Visas

Students from a country outside of the European Union (EU) and the European Economic Area (EEA) must have a current visa to study in Sweden.  Visas are applied for through the Swedish Migration Board, Migrationsverket.  For information on how to apply, visit Migrationsverket.

Please apply for a visa as soon as possible, as this procedure usually takes from six to eight weeks.  You will not be permitted to enter Sweden without a current student visa.

If you are a citizen of an EU and EEA country, you do not need to apply for a visa to study in Sweden.  However, you will need to apply for a residence permit within three months of your arrival in Sweden.  Residence permits are organised through the Swedish Migration Board, Migrationsverket.  For information on how to apply, visit Migrationsverket.

Accommodation

As part of your exchange agreement, SLU can arrange accommodation on your behalf.  However, accommodation is only guaranteed to those who apply in time.  Those students will be provided with a fully furnished student dorm room located in close proximaty to the campus.  Some dorms rooms have a private bathroom while others while others have shared facilities.  Please contact your exchange coordinator for information on accommodation availability.  If you do not require accommodation during the allocated dates, we will cancel your reservation.  You will then be responsible for organising your own accommodation.

Remember that the Student Affairs Office can help you with any question or problem that you may have.  Please feel free to contact them at any time at exchangestudies@slu.se.
