Useful Information About Sweden

Sweden is the third largest country in the European Union and stretches 1500 km from north to south.  The landscape is diverse, with snow coloured mountains, sandy beaches and an abundance of green forest.  Sweden has the largest population of the Nordic countries and shares a border with both Norway and Finland.  Sweden has a reputation for being a friendly, safe and picturesque country, making it a popular destination for international students.

Swedish people are known around the world for being progressive, innovative and quick to embrace new ideas.  Multinational companies such as IKEA, H&M, Saab, Volvo, and Ericsson were founded in Sweden.  Sweden is a multicultural country with almost 12% of the population born outside of Sweden.

Sweden has a rich history dating back to the legendary Vikings, who were one of the first groups of people to travel the world.  Many remnants from the Vikings still remain.  Sweden remained neutral in both World Wars, escaping the hardship and devastation suffered elsewhere in Europe.

Although Swedish is the official national language, Swedish people are in general very good at speaking English.  In fact, Sweden is the second most English-proficient country in the world where English is not the official language, making it very easy for tourists to get around.

The Swedish cuisine is famous for its Smörgåsbord (a buffet of savoury delicacies), Baltic herring, meatballs, pea soup and pancakes.
