Transportation in Sweden

Bikes
Biking is a very popular mode of transportation amongst students in Sweden.  It is cheap, easy, and a great was of exploring the area.  If you are interested in purchasing a bike, keep an eye out for advertisements on campus or visit a bicycle store in town.  Use the bike racks conveniently located on each SLU campus to park your bike, and remember to use a lock as bike theft is a major problem in student cities.  The law in Sweden also states that bike lights must be used when riding in the dark.

Busses
Using the bus is a convenient and inexpensive way to travel within cities and between cities.  Many bus companies have student discounts, so make sure to always present your student I.D. card when purchasing a ticket.

Driving
Sweden, like most European countries, has right-handed traffic.  To drive a car in Sweden you must be at least 18 years old and hold a current driver’s license, and this license must be in your possession whenever you drive.  You can use a foreign driver’s license for one year in Sweden.  If you are staying longer you must apply for a Swedish driver’s license.  You can apply for a license through the Swedish Transport Agency (Transportstyrelsen).  For more information, visit Transportstyrelsen.

Always be careful when driving in Sweden as weather conditions can change quickly and the winters bring lots of snow and ice to the roads.  Winter tires are required from November to April.

Trains
Using the trains is a great way to travel around Sweden, and student and youth discounts are often available upon presentation of a current student I.D. card.  For more information, visit www.sj.se.
