PFS0080 Gender and Natural Resource Management: Part I – Forest and Forestry, 3.0 credits

Prerequisites:
to be accepted as PhD student.

Objective:
This course gives an introduction to the concept of gender as a research field, focussing on natural resource utilization and management in general, and forest and forestry in particular. It will provide the students skills necessary to be able to understand issues of gender and power, and to apply tools for gender analysis, in their area of work.

Content
Gender theories, gender sensitive methods, and key debates are presented and discussed in relation to natural resources and sustainable development. Students will be provided with a variety of examples of current research questions as well as practical applications of the concept of gender and a gender perspective in natural resource management. Empirical findings from contemporary gender studies in forestry, farming, and reindeer husbandry both in developed and developing countries will be presented and discussed.
This 3 HEC course format will also provide the basic theoretical and methodological foundations of the concept of gender for students who intend to take on Gender and Natural Resource Management Part II - Gender, Development and Environmental Governance.

Examination:
The examination will consist of active participation in lectures and seminars (minimum 80%), and a short written report to be presented at a concluding seminar.

The course is given by an Environmental Certified Department (ISO 14001)

The course is arranged in connection to the Research School "Nordic Rural Areas in Transition" and organized in cooperation with the Department of Urban and Rural Studies, SLU.
