Francis Pius Mmanda has recently been accepted as a PhD student at the HUV. Francis will perform his experiments in Tanzania and the title of his project is ”Nutritive value and use of locally available low-cost feed ingredients for Tilapia farming in Tanzania”.

Facts:

Francis Pius Mmanda is employed at the Institute of Marine Sciences, Zanzibar, Tanzania, and was admitted as PhD student at the faculty on 20th of September 2016. Francis is one of several PhD students within the Marine Science Programme 2015-2020 which is financed by SIDA and performed in co-operation with the University of Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania.

The objective of Francis Pius Mmanda’s PhD project is to evaluate the nutritive value of locally available feed ingredients fed to tilapia species (Orechromis niloticus and Oreochromis urolepis urolepis) and their hybrids for sustainable development of fish farming in Tanzania.

Tilapia is the most cultured fish for aquaculture in Tanzania and worldwide due to its fast growth rate, general hardness,  resistance to disease, ability to grow on a wide range of diets, ability to reproduce readily in captivity, high prolific rate, ability to survive at low oxygen concentration,  good carcass  taste and ability to withstand a wide range of salinities.

Traditionally, the majority of tilapia fish farmers in Tanzania feed their fish with locally available feedstuffs of both plant and animal origin. However, there is limited data available on the abundance, nutritional characteristics and fish performance of available feed resources.
