Agroforestry Network - a new climate initiative for Agenda 2030

Published: 23 November 2016

Landscape restoration, and sustainable intensification of agriculture, has a central role in a number of UN Sustainable Development Goals in Agenda 2030. The new Agroforestry Network launched yesterday will function as a platform for more people to be able to apply agroforestry in low-income countries as means to eradicate poverty and hunger.

-  Agroforestry and increased tree planting is very important for the restoration of the ravaged landscape in developing countries. This landscape restoration, and sustainable intensification of agriculture, has a central role in a number of UN sustainability in Agenda 2030 as means to eradicate poverty and hunger of a growing population, to meet climate change, and for the management of water, said Professor Anders Malmer, Director of SLU Global at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.

The Swedish Minister for Rural Affairs, Sven-Erik Bucht, launched the network which is an initiative by Vi Agroforestry, SLU Global, SIANI and Focali. The meeting at Vi Agroforestry in Stockholm contained both discussions about the network’s future form and activities, as well as presentations of the initial partners.
