PhD hat trick in Umeå

Spring 2017 was busy days for Professor Pekka Huhtanen at Agricultural Research for Northern Sweden, as three of his PhD students defended their theses within 1.5 months.

The department of Agricultural Research for Northern Sweden performs research and edcuation within the area of cultivation of forages and ruminant nutrition, especially dairy cows. Pekka Huhtanen, who is professor in ruminant nutrition at the department started working in 2009. During spring 2017 he had an extra busy time, as three of his Phd students defended their theses within 1.5 months of each other.

Merko Vaga was first at March 31, with his thesis "Investigating ruminal nitrogen metabolism", Helena Gidlund defended 3 weeks later (April 21) on "Domestic protein feeds in dairy production - Potential of rapeseed feeds and red clover". Last of the three little birds was Edward Hernando Cabezas Garcia, who defended May 10 with his thesis "Methane production in dairy cows - Individual cow variability in methane production".
