Award winning thesis about SLU

Published: 22 March 2017

Karl Bruno, PhD at SLU, has been awarded by The Royal Swedish Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities. The prize is SEK 50 000 and was presented by the King Carl XVI Gustaf.

Karl Bruno receives the prize for his thesis Exporting agrarian expertise: development aid at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and its predecessors, 1950–2009.

The thesis is part of a project about SLU and its history. Karl Bruno has chosen to study the role SLU and its predecessors played for the construction of Swedish aid. On a general level, he found that SLU and its predecessors (especially the Agricultural and Veterinary Colleges) played an important role in building the Swedish rural development-oriented aid until the 1900s. More specifically he identified a number of phenomena; one is the personal relationships that is built up, where the aid in its first phase was built informally and where personal networks played a crucial role, with people like Ernst Michanek and Lennart Hjelm.
