Standardized measurements of fish abundance from scientific trawl survey and modelled environmental data have been analysed with advanced regression techniques to disentangle main factors affecting the distribution of cod in the Baltic.
This study shows that the spatial distribution of adult cod in the Baltic during the last three decades was mainly affected by the population size, the concentration of salinity and oxygen in the water and the extent of suitable reproductive areas. As population size decreases, the cod population concentrates to the southern part of the Baltic Sea, where a more marine environment is encountered.
The results from the study, led by SLU Aqua, are published in PlosOne.
