Visit by Ethiopian environment minister hosted by SLU

Published: 23 May 2017

An Ethiopian delegation spent a week in Sweden to study the Swedish forest sector. One out of five days was spent at SLU and SLU Global was the facilitator for the delegation during the whole week

The delegation of eight persons was led by HE. Dr. Gemedo Dalle (Minister for Environment, Forests and Climate) and HE. Ato Kebede Yimam (State Minister for Environment, Forests and Climate).

Ethiopia has ambitious plans for a developing economy under a frame of sustainability and carbon-neutrality. Forest restoration and inclusive value chains for forest products are central. At the same time, the Swedish strategy for development support to Ethiopia has a focus on environment and climate. Thus, the mission of the delegation was both to be inspired of the development and the current state of the Swedish forest sector, as well as deepen their contacts with potential partners for development.

The first day was spent at SLU and focused on presentations and discussions around the sector development and relevant research, as well as current and earlier SLU cooperation with Ethiopia. Ethiopia is one of SLU´s oldest low income country partner. Several of the members in the delegation are alumnis from SLU.

SLU Global facilitated the program and the logistics for the full week, with some assistance from Swedish International Water Institute (SIWI). The Director Anders Malmer (Professor of tropical forest ecology and management/soil science) participated in the program to maintain focus and progress in a very intensive week.

The second day was spent at a SETRA-sawmill, the forest owners association Mellanskog and a Stora Enso board factory in Fors, Avesta Municipality.

Third day was hosted by SIWI and contained actors like the Royal Academy for Agriculture and Forestry, Stockholm Resilience Center, Stockholm Environmental Institute, Swedish Environmental Protection Agency and Sida. Late afternoon that day the ministers and the Ethiopian Ambassador also had a meeting with Vice Minister Ulrika Modéer at the Swedish Foreign Ministry.

The fourth day was spent in and around Jönköping, visiting the Swedish Forest Agency.

On a long days trip back to Stockholm in the last day the County Administrative Board of Jönköping County presented how forest biodiversity is conserved in various ways with field visits at a nature reserve and at a farm in the Vättern east Escarpment Biosphere area. Further along the road Sveaskog hosted the delegation at Omberg. Here much of the discussion specifically was about Sveaskogs Eco-parks and about FSC certification. Finally, the Swedish meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) in Norrköping was visited this last day.
