Research projects

The goal is to study the modulation and integration of olfactory signals from the antennae in higher order brain centers in the moth Spodoptera littoralis (African Cotton Leafworm). This will be done by electrophysiological recordings from local interneurons and projection neurons in the antennal lobes (the first olfactory brain center of insects), by use of whole cell patch clamping and optical imaging techniques. In doing this, I am currently focusing on how different physiological states effects the integration/modulation of olfactory signals both directly (changes in signal strength) and indirectly (changes in production of neurotransmitters/neuromodulaters).
