Integrated plant protection

Larvae of Syrphidae are importamt predators on aphids. These adult flies, Episyrphus balteatus, seek pollen among daylilies.

In the research group Integrated Plant Protection, we are studying different pests and their natural enemies on agricultural and horticultural crops in both field and greenhouse. We are investigating pest biology and ecology and how they are affected by cultural practices and other measures and their impact in different cropping systems. Through our research we are aiming to create a scientific base for the development of sustainable cropping systems and control strategies.

Integrated Plant Protection is based on a combination of measures against pests. These include a well planned crop rotation and suitable cultural practices, the use of resistant varieties, conservation and enhancement of beneficial organisms, the use of biological controls and forecasting systems for chemical control.
