Welcome to Fisheries Research Station in Älvkarleby
Fish farming is a growing industry in Sweden and the world and more and more consumers are demanding farmed fish to supplement the wild-caught. A requirement for an environmentally friendly and animal ethical aquaculture is that it conducts research and breeding of farmed fish. One of the Fisheries Research Station's tasks is to produce salmon and trout for the river Dalälven, totaling approximately 140 000 2-year old salmon and trout per year.
To conserve fish varieties
The rearing of fish that will be released into lakes and rivers follow specific principles. Here it is essential that the fish keeps its natural properties, from one generation to the next. The parents of the salmon released into river Dalälven will be from river Dalälven and the choice of the fishes that are taken for breeding is done to obtain as much genetic variation as possible.
The Research Station is also developing new knowledge and methods to fish growing up to be as natural as possible even though it is kept in captivity, their first two years. It is important to know which factors affect the fish and how to avoid it learns a behavior that makes it vulnerable when it it released into the wild.
