Department of Forest Genetics and Plant Physiology
The Department of Forest Genetics and Plant Physiology was founded in the late 1970s - when the Forestry School moved to Umeå - from parts of the former departments of Forest Botany and Forest Genetics. The number of employees has since grown steadily and now amounts to about 100, postdoctoral researchers and postgraduate students included. The international element is large with some 20 nationalities represented. In the late 1990s the idea came up to form a research and training center, Umeå Plant Science Centre, UPSC, together with the Department of Plant Physiology at Umeå University. The Department of Forest Genetics and Plant Physiology moved into the premises adjacent to the partner and the two partners developed a close cooperation on research issues, technology platforms, and training at master's and doctoral level.

The department conducts introductory and advanced training in plant physiology, ecophysiology, plant molecular biology, forest genetics and forest biotechnology within the Forestry master’s program and, at the advanced level, also as separate master’s programs and courses.
The department offers postgraduate studies in biology, specializing in plant physiology, ecophysiology, plant molecular biology and forest genetics. Postgraduate education has since 1978 resulted in some 80 doctors and currently some 30 postgraduate students are registered. Postgraduate courses are generally held in cooperation with Plant Physiology and / or other UPSC-associated departments.
