Publishing and printing of Master Theses

Preparing for your Thesis Work
It is wise to plan your thesis work in good time, because it is time consuming and it is quite an effort. Here you can find instructions how to proceed.

Printing
The thesis should be sent to Hans Fryk in the form of a Word file and include information on credits, course, supervisor(s) etc. For an overview on what is required, students are recommended to look at recently published master theses on the Departments home page under “Publications”.

Word file
Write the thesis in the WORD template. OBS! The easiest way is before starting to write, save the template directly on your own computer and work with it there. However, if you have not done this, then you will need to copy and paste your word document in progressive order into the required template. This is done by marking every title and text type one after each other and then clicking on the correct title and text type in the template for the different text format alternatives. The different alternatives can be seen if you click on Formatting (under “Format”). You must format all your text according to the template layout including all titles and figure/tables text before completion.

A lot formatting !? The format template can include many formatting routines from earlier work in your computer, however those that should be used include: Figure label (under figure); H2 after H1; H2 top; H3 after H2; H3 top; H4 after H3; H4 top; Normal; Heading1; Heading2; Heading3; Heading4; Pagination; Table label (before table); Table text,  and nothing else.

Deletion of format list.
If there are several types of formatting already on your computer, you can click to ”show temporary formatting” found on the bottom right of the formatting list and then choose to adjust. There you can change the formatting according to that needed.

How and what titles should I use?

To start a page with a heading, you mark the heading row and click on the heading type available that then becomes on top. In this way, you avoid having a blank row over the heading.

If you have several headings one after each other without text between then you use for example "Heading 2 after H1" which formats a Heading2 after a Heading1. This is to avoid blank rows between the headings.

Tips: When the heading formatting is correct, it will not be possible to insert blank rows before or after the heading.

Which format for which text?
"Normal" is the format text required for all body text ??.
"Table label” should be used before the table without full-stop and start as: Table 1. Here comes the text…..
"Table text" is the format for including contents of Tables.
"Figure label" should be inserted after the figure and be finished with a full-stop. It should start as: Figure 1. Here comes the text...

All instructions to Tables, Figures and Appendices in the continuous text should always start with a Capital letter. For example it may see out as: " In Figure 1 can results of Table 2 be seen but according to Appendix 4 can no conclusions be made...."

Page numbering should be centered and line spacing single (this is also formatted in the template).

Do NOT use headers and footers.

Keywords should be inserted after Abstract.

English title is needed before registration in LADOK. If the thesis is written in Swedish then an English title is required as a sub-title on the front page

Other information required
- 10 examples of the theses are required if no specifications are made.

- Telephone number and mail address to author.

Hans F. will check the cover page, titles (first proof) and publications list is correct. In order to do this he will need information on:

- Author
- Credits for the thesis (15/30 hp)
- Level (C/D)
- Subject area (e.g. Forest Management, biology etc)
- program (e.g. Forestry program 02/07)
- Supervisor, with SLU and company (when required).

If you wish, a photograph(s) (colour/black and white) can be inserted without additional cost on the front page. Photographs should be given/sent to Hans F. at the same time as the thesis. You are responsible for obtaining permission (if needed) for using the photograph.

Publishing
The Masters thesis is published as an electronic version in the Department of Forest Products series and is given a ISSN number and must therefore follow certain regulations regarding appearance. From 1 January 2009 the thesis is printed in only 5 examples retained by the Department. If you as an author wants copies you have to tell Hans before publishing, after that it´s too late. Additional examples may be purchased by the company/author if desired. All Master thesis are published on the Departments homepage through Epsilon.

On the occasions the sponsoring company requires that certain information from the study is not released to the general public, the student must write two versions of the thesis or use an appendix containing the restricted information that can later be removed. The supervisors, examinator and thesis opponent should however have access to all information including the appendix.

After approval the thesis normally takes one working week for printing at the publishers. Information on delivery can be obtained from Cecilia Åstrand.

If the thesis is not completed according to the instructions above when given to Hans F., the publication process will be postponed and the work returned to the author.
