The competence area includes monitoring and analysis of:
• International forest political developments, in particular processes within the UN system and organizations for international trade, and processes in related areas, including the environment and climate.
• Philosophy ie. development of the world's forest resources, forestry practices, trade in forest products and forest products.
• The role of forests in global development and poverty reduction.
The work has its roots in SLU's commitment to international development. Forest sector's globalization also motivates the institution's international focus.
Department courses at Masters level on forest industry issues and forest policies have clear international perspective. Every year the popular course "The international forest sector - industry, trade and environment" is given.
The Department has recently developed cooperative agreements with countries such China, Russia, Mozambique, Ethiopia, East Africa, Latin America. Part of the research, and training is conducted in Nordic or European collaborations. We develop partnerships and exchanges with major forest industrial countries such as USA, Canada and Finland.
Department members have assignments in international organizations such as the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) and the Scandinavian Society of Forest Economics (SSFE).
