Wood science
The Department carries out basic/applied research and teaching on wood and wood-based products with the aim of increasing knowledge on wood raw material and its properties. Our major long-term aim is to develop more environmentally orientated processes and products for the forest and wood industries. Research is carried out within the following areas: Wood technology and properties, wood anatomy, wood and fibre micro- and ultrastructure, fibre modification, microbial degradation of wood and wood products, wood and fungal biotechnology, molecular mycology and fungal ecology, wood protection and durability as well as painted wood problems. We also carrie out laboratory and field testing of traditional and alternative wood protective treatments and is officially accredited according to SS-EN ISO/IEC 17025:2005. Research in the Centres CRUW, Funcfiber and WURC is also driven within the Wood science area. Research is financed by Faculty and external grants from VINNOVA, FORMAS, Industry, and various foundations. Widespread international (e.g. through EU-COST actions, EU-projects, Formas/Sida, EU-standardization) and national collaboration (e.g. through Centres of Excellence) exists. The Department provides PhD and industry related courses and participates in undergraduate courses both within and outside the Forest Faculty as well as Erasmus programs.
