Biotechnology in the pulp and paper industry
Research on biotechnology is concentrated on basic mechanisms for degradation and modification of wood cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin using micro-organisms and their enzymes. Projects of interest include biopulping (delignification of wood chips by means of wood-degrading fungi) and biobleaching of pulps (enzyme-aided bleaching). Enzymatic and ultrastructural studies using wood degrading white-rot and brown-rot fungi and their enzymes are performed.
