The equivalent of 120 credits including 90 credits in Forest Science/Forest Management or in Biology and English language proficiency demonstrated as:

Objective:
Objectives: After the cours the student shall:
• Have a clear understanding of central ecological concepts describing forest development in tropical- and subtropical areas
• Be familiarzed with central silviculture terminologies in tropical- and subtropical forests
• Be able to handle tools for integrating environmental, social and economic objectives in silviculture strategies
• Be able to evaluate the importance of different silvicultural methods for the maintenance of forest productivity and return
• Have knowledge of silviculture of planted forests for large-scale industrial production, and for small-scale- and environmental purposes
• Be able to design silvicultural practices for maximum growth and yield, quality, biodiversity and protection against climate change
• Have knowledge of the principles for forest landscape restoration in tropical- and subtropical areas
• Be able to analyze, summarize and evaluate research results on silviculture in tropical- and subtropical areas
• Be able to evaluate and assess advantages and disadvantages of afforestation in a practical context, and evaluate the importance of planted forests for the production of goods and services.

Content
Content: The following topics will be discussed in lectures, exercises and excursions:
• Tropical and subtropical forestry: Definitions and challenges
• The purpose of silviculture in tropical and subtropical forests including timber production, woodfuel production, food security, environmental protection and climate change
• Silviculture systems in natural moist tropical and subtropical forests
• Silviculture systems in the natural dry tropical and subtropical forests
• Afforestation and forest landscape restoration in tropical and subtropical areas
• Plantation silviculture including species knowledge, seed- and fruit handling, clonal forestry, establishment and maintenance of industrial crops, management systems for afforestation, stand dynamics, growth, yield and harvest
• Small-scale forestry and agroforestry
• Proprietary rights and other social and economic factors affecting silviculture in tropical and subtropical areas.
