About the Department

 

Education: The Department is responsible for ca 40 ECTS credits at undergraduate level and 80 ECTS credits at Master’s level within the framework of the Master of Science in Forestry programme. Courses are grouped into six subject areas: Remote Sensing and Geographical Information Systems (GIS), Forest Inventory, Forest Planning, Forest Technology, Wood Supply and Organization and Leadership. Doctoral education follows the six competence areas (see Research).

Research: The Department conducts research in six competence areas: Remote Sensing, Forest Inventory and Empirical Ecosystem Modeling, Forest Planning, Forest Technology, Forest in Rural Studies and International Forestry. Research at the Department is focused on multilateral cooperation combining expertise from our many research groups. This gives unique possibilities for creating holistic solutions for the sustainable use of natural resources.

Environmental Monitoring and Assessment: The Department has ongoing programmes within Environmental Monitoring and Assessment in order to provide authorities and other interested parties with accurate and up to date information on natural resources. The Department has three main programmes: The Swedish National Forest Inventory, which is responsible for providing Sweden’s official statistics about the state and change in Sweden’s forests, the National Inventory of Landscapes in Sweden (NILS), which covers all land types and Terrestrial Habitat Monitoring (THUF), which monitors the habitats covered by the EU species and habitat directive.

The Department has primary responsibility for the Heureka unit, which maintains and develops computer systems for short and long term forest analysis, e.g. timber production, environmental aspects, recreational value and carbon sinks. The Department assists with expertise within statistics and GIS support. The Department also host a so called Data-platform, with the task to assist in quality assuring all environmental monitoring and assessment data at the Faculty.
