The primary focus for the department is the planning and implimentation of the annual National Forest Inventory. With this as a base the department is a major source of national forestry statistiscs. As well as the tasks which fall within the framework of the National Forest Inventory the deparment is also responsible for longterm forest forecasts, data delivery to both national and international bodies, data and anlaysis on a consultation basis and undertaking the field work for the National Forest Soils Survey.
The deparment has 20 office based employees and ca 50 seasonal field workers.
The office based staff are divided into three units.

The IT unit is repsonsible for the design, development and drfit of the IT-systems for data collection, storage, analysis and data delivery within the framework of Riksskogstaxeringen.
The field unit is responsible for both the planing and administation of field work within the National Forest Inventory. The field unit has a wide range of responisbilty covering areas such as recruiting, training and support the field crews; collation of catographic material for the field crews; compling the field handbook; purchase and maintenance of field equipment; field-based quailty control; data correction; and collection and analysis of tree bore cores.
The analysis unit is responsible for producing and delivering statistics and expert analysis from quaility controlled field data. This can be in the form of regulary reporting within existing contracts with both national bodoes such as the Swedish Forest Agency and Swedens Officical Statistics and international bodies such as EU and UN. Data delivery can also take the form of customised analysis, for example for local, regional or national authorities, forestry companies of researchers.
