Admission

Last changed: 19 May 2016

All PhD positions are advertised and the recruitment is typically done by the research leader of the intended project.  No general entry to graduate studies is available. At the Faculty for Forest Sciences about 40 PhD students per year begin projects within SLU's competence areas. Most positions are advertised internationally and the selection process strives to identify candidates suitable for graduate studies and research.

Application for admission to graduate studies should be submitted to the faculty using the form above. Applications are dealt with continiously. If received during 7 January-7 June and 15 August-15 December a decision will typically be returned within 2 weeks. All other applications are dealt with as soon as possible. Admission can be granted to more than one university (see guidelines).

  • Please note that a preliminary individual study plan (ISP) should be enclosed.
  • At the latest 3 months after admission the ISP must be finalized (form found here).

Employment as a PhD student follows after the admission.

PhD students employed externally (e.g. industry) must provide a written contract from their employer.

  • PhD openings should be announced at SLU's homepage. International announcement via alternative electronic and printed media is encouraged.
  • Exemptions from advertising may occassionally be granted.
  • When an invitation letter is requested from SLU by the donor, the letter must clearly state the following;
    1) admission is decided by the faculty and cannot be guaranteed by department or individual researcher,
    2) four years of funding is required (currently the minimum funding acceptable is 13,000 SEK/month net income),
    3) the sholarship may not be conditioned in any manner (e.g. requirement to work for a particular organization after graduation).
  • The hosting department assumes full financial responsibility in case the sholarship or other funding stops (thereby ensuring a total of four years of studies).
