PhD studies train you to become an independent researcher in command of the tools used for scientific enquiry and project management. Each faculty has a PhD council working with a wide range of issues relating to PhD studies (The Forest faculty's PhD council).
The course work contains general and specific courses, including some mandatory courses. Courses are searchable in SLUkurs a minimum of two months before the start date.
Mandatory courses (if PhD admission date is 1 Juli 2007 or later):
1. Pedagogics (3 ECTS). Given by the Division of Student Affairs and Learning Development yearly in Umeå (in English), but dates vary. Also given in Uppsala on a more frequent basis.
2. Philosophy of science/Research ethics (3 ECTS in total). Currently this block is given as two separate courses of 2 ECTS each. Please contact Carl-Gustaf Thulin (Philosophy of Science) or Per Sandin (Research Ethics) for more information.
For students admitted to PhD studies after 1 January 2010, statistics is also mandatory:
3. Statistics (at least 15 ECTS). This is inclusive of any statistics taken as an undergraduate. For students already in possesion of 15 ECTS of statistics, these credits can be allocated to other courses.
