The Department of Animal Nutrition and Management comprises both teaching and research activities. Our work encompasses the main agricultural species, i.e. cattle, sheep, pigs and poultry, as well as reindeer, fish and animals kept for leisure and companionship, such as horses and dogs. Research is focused on nutrient metabolism and utilisation, and on the relationship between husbandry systems, animal welfare, health, behaviour and production.
More than 70 people are employed by the department. About 3/4 of them are scientists and PhD students. They are supported by administrative staff and qualified technicians working in the laboratories and in research projects.
The department is situated at two locations in the vicinity of Uppsala: the main campus at Ultuna, and the research centre at Kungsängen. We have access to laboratories and facilities for cattle, pigs and poultry. Our reindeer research is all done in field.
