Swedish and international standards
The Swedish standard (SS 03 82 07 Dokumentation - bibliografiska referenser - innehåll och utformning) governs how bibliographic references are written.
The Swedish standard is a translation of the international standard (ISO 690 Documentation - bibliographic references - content, form and structure) with certain Swedish additions.
There is also an international standard for electronic documents (ISO 690:2:1997 Information and documentation - bibliographic references - Part 2: Electronic documents or parts thereof) and a corresponding Swedish standard (SS-ISO 690-2 Dokumentation - bibliografiska referenser - Del 2: Elektroniska dokument eller delar därav) The Swedish standard is a translation of the international standard.
These standards are very brief and elementary. There is no standard for some electronic documents, yet!
There are a number of internationally accepted variants of how bibliographic references are written. The Vancouver system is used in medical science, the Oxord system in humanistics and the Harvard system in science.
International scientific journals often have their own design for references. Information (Instruction for authors) can be found on the homepage of the journal.
The Harvard system is recommended for use within SLU.
The following is a guide to how to write bibliographic references according to the Harvard system.
