Loans

Everyone over 18 is welcome to borrow books at the SLU Library. Bring your ID card or passport to obtain a library card that is valid at all SLU libraries.

The library card is personal but requested books can be picked up on behalf of another patron bringing his or her library card.

Reminders for delayed books are primarily sent be e-mail. Please remember to keep your contact information up to date. Log in to your account to change your details.

The library send courtesy notices as a service, but you are responsible of returning your loans on time. If you have unpaid fines you can not use the self-checkout machine until the fine is paid.

Students with disabilities are entitled to additional services. Read more about borrowing adapted literature.

If you are a distance student, special lending rules apply.

Interlibrary loans

Material for research and studies not found within SLU Library can be requested from other libraries. This service is open to SLU staff and students and customers with special agreements. Material that is found within the SLU Library but is out on loan will not be requested by interlibrary loan.

Loan periods

  • Long term loans: 30 - 180 days (can be recalled after 30 days).
  • Short term loans: 8 days. Fine for late return: SEK 10 per book and open day. Short term loans primarily apply to course literature.
  • Reference books: 1 day. Should be returned by 10 am the following day or the first working day after a weekend or national holiday. Late returns result in a delay charge of SEK 20 per hour and book, not exceeding SEK 100 per book. Reference books cannot be renewed or requested.
  • Interlibrary loans: 30 days (can be recalled earlier if the lending library needs the book).

Renewing your loans

Loans may be renewed if they have not been requested by another patron. Renew your loans on the webOpens in new window or by contacting the library.

Loans can be renewed several times during one year. After that the book must be returned.

Renewing interlibrary loans

Contact the SLU Library to renew books from libraries outside SLU.

Requested books

When a requested book arrives a message is sent to the patron. Requested books remains on the pickup shelf for 4 days. SLU researchers and staff in Uppsala and Skara get their books delivered to their offices.

Material not available for loan

  • Journals (exceptions may occur)
  • Newspapers
  • Maps
  • Literature published before 1900
  • Delicate or especially valuable material, for instance manuscripts, prints etc.
  • Literature from special collections

Delayed, lost or damaged books

If the material is not returned in spite of subsequent reminders a bill will be issued. The charge covers the replacement cost plus an administrative fee of 500 SEK per item. The minimum charge is 800 SEK. Unpaid bills are forwarded to debt collecting.

If you damage or lose the material you have borrowed, you are liable to pay compensation. If you lose a part of a multi-volume work and the part cannot be bought separately, you are liable to pay for the replacement of the whole work. An administrative fee will be charged in addition. Normal wear and tear is not considered as damage.

Privacy

Information about loans and requests is protected according to the Law of Secrecy, chapter 22 §9 (SFS 1980:100, 1989:713).
