Ranking lists are disputed. The ranking is based not only on bibliometric data. The ranking lists address different audiences (scientists, students, expert advisors). There is every reason to critically evaluate bibliometric analyses and ranking lists in particular.

Data sources: Web of Science (from 2010) and aspects of research, teaching, labour market qualification and internationalization. The ranking covers 200 universities in USA, Europe, and Asia. Times Higher Education Supplement.
- Ranking Web of Universities
Data source: Google. The original aim was to promote web publication, not to rank institutions. Supporting Open Access initiatives, electronic access to scientific publications and to other academic material are the primary targets. Ranks 4,000 universities worldwide. The indicators include web (link) visability.
Thomson Reuters publishes citation analyses and ranking lists in several subject areas
