Open Access Publishers
Open Access publishers operate under a different business model than traditional publishers. Open Access publishers (and individual OA journals) often charge a publishing fee instead of subscription fees, in order to cover their costs.
That means that the author (or rather his/her department or funder) pays a fee for the actual publishing of the article. The article itself is then free to read for anyone with an online connection. Another result of this is that the copyright remains with the author instead of, as within traditional publishing, being transferred to the publishing company.
The SLU is an institutional member of three of the largest Open Access publishers. Find out what that means, below.
BioMed Central (BMC)
BioMed Central publishes more than 200 peer-reviewed Open Access journals in for example biology, biochemistry, medicine, veterinary sciences and physiology. Many of these journals are covered by Web of Science / Journal Citation Report and several have high Impact factors.
As an institutional member, the SLU can offer its employees a 15 % discount on the publication fee with BMC. Read more about this discount and see which SLU researchers have already published in BMC journals, on the BMC SLU web page.
Hindawi
Hindawi Publishing Corporation publishes over 200 peer- reviewed Open Access journals in science, technology and medicine.
As an employee of SLU you publish free of charge in Hindawi's journals. Read more about publishing with Hindawi on the Hindawi SLU web page.
Public Library of Science (PLoS)
Public Library of Science is a non-profit organisation which publishes seven peer-reviewed high-ranking journals in biology and medicine.
SLU has an agreement with PLoS which gives all employees at the university a 10 % discount on the publication fee in PLoS journals.
