MicroDrivE - Microbially Derived Energy

The aim of MicroDrivE is to develop production processes for biofuels as well as biochemicals and food/feed from forestry and agricultural biomass with maximal energy and economic output and minimal environmental impact.

Our research modules mimics the circular flow of biomass in sustainable production systems i.e. starting with biomass followed by production steps for biofuels, biochemicals and food/feed and ending with recirculation of residual nutrients to the soil.

We work together with industrial partners to use our research findings to design optimum processes considering existing.By working with many different stakeholders, we aim to be an open and effective program with positive synergies.

Research modules


Within the program, research is continuously performed in different modules, alone or combined. Also, larger research projects and programs are continuously formed, but vary over time depending on funding opportunities.

Several different departments at SLU are engaged in the program, in one or several modules; Chemistry and Biotechnology, Microbiology, Food Science and Energy and Technology. Information about different individual research topics and presently on-going larger project associations are listed to the right.
