Welcome to the seminar Open Access: Realization of the one of the core values of scholarship – the free exchange of ideas
Take part in the seminar presenting the latest most important developments in open access (OA)! How does OA-publishing influence contemporary scientific communication and interaction? Which benefits it might have for the visibility and impact of your and SLU’s scientific production? An up-to-date presentation of various OA-issues every researcher should know!
Wednesday, 24th of October, 10:00-11:00. Ultuna: Room D; Umeå: Holly-Wood; Alnarp: Lilla-Sessionssalen
The main advantage of publishing your research open access is often summed up in two words: visibility and impact. Visibility refers to the probability that a publication will be seen and disseminated, while impact concerns its long-term reception and the extent to which its findings influence future research and scientific debate. Both visibility and impact enhance the scientific reputation of authors and their institutions.
OA-articles are much more widely read than those which are not freely available on the Internet. Web-wide availability leads to increased use of scientific publications which in turn, among other things, raises their citation rates - a fact that has been empirically supported by several studies. Besides the increased citation flow, open access has other benefits for researchers and their affiliating scientific institutions, such as: visibility of and easy access to their scientific work, growing contacts, easy inclusion in new scientific and other networks, increased number of readers, enhanced probability of obtaining scientific grants and better international dissemination of the scientific work.
The seminar focuses on the following matters:
- Introduction to the most actual national and international open access-issues;
- Orientation in the available international OA-journals, OA-repositories and SLU:s Epsilon;
- The main rules of and helping tools for self-archiving that successfully lead you through the process of parallel publishing
- Publishers’ copyright policies at a glance;
- OA-polices of various scientific funders’ and the corresponding payment models.
We are looking forward to meeting you, answering your questions and hopefully launch a fruitful discussion!
