New Landscapes - New Live
The Faculty of Landscape Planning, Horticulture and Agricultural Science, Alnarp

New challenges in landscape planning, design and management:

Design in new urban contexts
Urbanising and globalising movements continuously change the social and spatial contexts. Cultural multiplicity increases the challenges in designing successful public space. There are conflicts between environmental benefits of urban density and health benefits of urban green. How do landscape architect schools meet the demands? Do we practice landscape urbanism?

New regional and global perspectives
A mix of local, regional and global perspectives creates new territorial and land use aspects. Increased commuting and mobility leads to a change in focus from the municipal to the regional domains. New lifestyles create new peri-urban landscapes. Landscape planning meets unknown challenges in the wake of climate change. How do we prepare landscape architects for work in an urbanising globe – with most people living in squatter areas?

Cultural heritage of future landscapes
The European Landscape Convention highlight all landscape as being valuable; landscapes of outstanding beauty, ordinary and everyday landscapes, as well as derelict and damaged landscapes. Cultural heritage is an issue for all types of landscapes. Most of Europe's 'traditional' landscapes are no longer fully sustainable: unless maintained by public support. How can cultural heritage be kept visible in future landscapes? How can new rural and urban landscapes be dealt with as heritage? What cultural heritage do we create for tomorrow?

Planting design, construction and management
Design with plants and management of landscapes are closely connected to overall ideals in society. The performance of the dynamic green resource as a whole is also dependant on ecological requirements and new innovations concerning material and technical knowledge. Sustainability, climate changes and social benefits are on the political agenda. How can various aspects of knowledge influence the way we design, construct and manage vegetation systems in a new and innovative way?

Communicative approaches and stakeholder participation
Involvement of the public is important issue of the European Landscape Convention. How can communicative approaches and stakeholder participation be used in planning, design and management of landscapes? How can different interest groups be involved? What conflicts arise? Which methods are employed? How can contracting be developed? How does different ways of organising management affect the users? What is the role of landscape architects as experts in this process?

New approaches to teaching landscape architecture
What new approaches to teaching and learning have we got to meet the new challenges?
