The project aims to reconstruct and analyse historical changes in abundance, diversity, and spatial distribution of commercial species mainly in Kattegat and Skagerrak, and limitedly to the data available in the Baltic.
The project collates existing biological, ecological, and environmental data that could contribute to explain large scale variability in the spatial distribution and abundance of exploited populations since the onset of the industrial fisheries in the area.
The project will be able to provide novel baselines in terms of stock abundance and structure that will be of primary importance for a correct assessment of the current status of exploited stocks in Swedish waters. These and other related parameters are considered crucial for long-temr management of marine resources, marine spatial planning and implementation of an ecosystem approach to fisheries management.
Among the main species investigated by the project there are: plaice (Pleuronectes platessa), turbot (Scophthalmus maximus), cod (Gadus morhua), haddock (Melanogramus aeglefinus), pollack (Pollachius pollachius), whiting (Merlangius merlangius), European lobster (Homarus gammarus).
The project is structured in three workpackages:
WP1 - analysis of the distribution and abundance of targeted stocks
WP2 - identification of the historical aggregations of adult fish and study of their temporal persistence
WP3 - analysis of environmental variability on stock temporal and spatial dynamics
Waking the Deads is financed by Naturvårdsverket (Dnr 309-1685-09 Nh).
